We’ve all been there. Red wine. Pasta sauce. Ink from your favorite pen. Your toddler’s grape juice. Chipotle’s new queso dip. Over the years, you have worn it all, and by now you know to run for the club soda, cold water, baking soda, stain-remover pen, or detergent you have on hand.
At this stage, you may think safe from the stain, but the battle isn’t even close to over. You see, stains leave an invisible chemical residue on your garments.
The Drycleaning and Laundry Institute conducted chemical testing to see just how much of an impact stains have on garments.
A Scientific Lesson in Stain Treatment
In one experiment, the Institute spilled juice on a sweater. They removed the stain to the best of their abilities, and then used generic, professional-grade cleaning products on the stain. Upon analysis of the sweater, they found a permanent stain in place of the old stain.
As it turns out, the heat from the cleaning process led to accelerated oxidation of the tannin and sugar residues from the juice. In the end, the invisible stain resurfaced after being professionally cleaned.
The Institute then tested the effects of an alcoholic beverage on a shirt. Again, they got the same residual stain that showed itself after the professional cleaning products were used. In this case, fading was visible where the alcohol came in contact with the fabric.
The worst part about the second test is that alcohol is used in so many household products, like perfume, cologne, lotion, and hairspray. So, how do you keep your clothes looking fresh and at their peak when so many products could have a lasting bad effect?
How do you prevent everyday stains from having a greater impact on your wardrobe?
Here are a few tips to prevent “invisible stains” from cropping up:
Phase one: treat immediately on your own.
- Thoroughly rinse the affected area of your garment with water.
- Blot, do not rub stains.
Phase two: seek professional cleaning for stain removal. Each of Admiral’s district managers each have 30+ years of experience.
- Get the stained garment to your drycleaner as soon as possible to prevent chemical reactions, like fading or permanent damage, from having an impact on your garment.
- Tell your cleaning professionals what the stain is so that they can create a scientific cleaning cocktail that will eliminate the damage once and for all.
Once Phase two is complete, you are ready to hang your garment in your closet worry-free.
