This Saturday October 7th marks 50 years of history between the Navy and Air Force. The two teams will begin their battle for the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, which will be awarded to the winner of the Service Academy games.
As tradition dictates, the winner of the Trophy not only gets bragging rights for the year, but the winning team is also invited to the White House to meet the President. The last decade has given Navy football players, fans, and coaches a lot to brag about.
A History of Winning
For 10 out of last 14 years, Navy has won the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy. Navy has also beat Air Force and Army in 24 out of the last 29 Service Academy games, according to Navy Sports.
Despite this seemingly predictable winning trend of late, anything can happen in football. And a record-breaking crowd is predicted to gather in old Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The previous attendance record was set in 2013. 38,205 attendees were recorded that year.
What to Expect on Game Day
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m., but we recommend you arrive early. The traditional “flyby” is scheduled to take place following the National Anthem at 3:19 p.m. This year’s aircraft of choice will feature four Boeing F/A-18F Superhornets flying out of Virginia Beach.
Both the Naval Academy and Air Force Academy bands will perform at half-time. Double matinee!
For those who want to cheer on their team in spirit, the Navy-Air Force game will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network. You can also listen to the game and pregame show on WBAL Radio (1090 AM).
Army-Navy Game is Next
After the Air Force game, Navy will face the third Service Academy branch: Army. The revered Navy-Army rivalry game is set to take place December 9th, so set your calendars now.
